With a great sense of artistic freedom, Catharina Dhaen creates paintings that are composed of different layers and are then overpainted. Personal moments from her daily life, from an autobiographical memory to an observed event, appear as pictorial motifs on her canvases. She approaches each painting as a finely balanced play between the figurative and the abstract, between the identifiable and the invisible.
With an emphasis on a rather cheerful colour scheme, the pictorial elements are full of symbols that seem to reflect on the possible elusiveness of her thoughts and feelings. Yet at the same time, each work in the exhibition, each painting or sketch in the video, is an open invitation to make your own associations.
‘A golden emotion’ invites you to slow down, leave all the stimuli behind, take a break and linger between moving brushstrokes and luminous accents. There is a ‘golden’ atmosphere prevailing at the Hilde Vandaele Gallery, where the exhibition invites you to explore in depth, to take a leisurely stroll while viewing the paintings for a moment in the stillness
of a perfect summer day.
Met de titel ‘a golden emotion’ speelt Catharina Dhaen eveneens met het idee van ‘the golden ratio’, dat in de meetkunde duidt op de verdeling van een lijnstuk in twee delen in een specifieke verhouding. De gulden snede krijgt doorheen de kunstgeschiedenis een intrinsieke bijna universele schoonheid mee en maakt het mogelijk om op een rationele manier een evenwichtig beeld te creëren.
De presentatie van de werken hier resoneert daarenboven met de rij van Fibonacci, beginnend met 0 wordt elk volgend element de som van de twee voorgaande cijfers: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, ... De zinspeling van de gouden emotie benadert dan ook de zogenaamde spanning tussen het rationele, tactische en het gevoelige, tactiele.
Catharina Dhaen roept een sfeer op die helemaal past bij de architectuur van het paviljoen, waar het licht fragiel binnenvalt en de schaduwen van de bomen lijnen trekken doorheen de ruimtes. En die ruimtelijkheid is niet alleen voelbaar in de licht-partijen die eveneens de omgeving omarmen, maar is ook inspiratie geweest voor een aantal nieuwe schilderijen die ‘van materie licht maken’. De tentoonstelling is als kostbare tijd die doet verwonderen en vertragen. Een verwelkoming.
