This exhibition is the fourth in a row which is being held in the new pavilion for Contemporary Art in Watou. In the previous exhibitions we explored the boundaries of the abstract language of forms through themes such as the connection with nature, motility, light and silence, inside and outside. However, in this group exhibition the focus is on substance as a concept.
The physical surface or the touchable relief are the anchor points which link the works of the artists Herman Bellaert, Paul Bourgeois, Iris Bouwmeester, Trees De Mits and Ilona Plaum. The theme of this exhibition is expressed by these artists in terms of folds in wrinkled textile or holes in vulnerable paper, a horizontal line in lead or acrylic, a wooden frame for a future house, a canvas made of earth or gold, an installation that is motionless and at the same time vigorously full of movement, or a branch in a corner that seems to disappear as in a photographic diorama. By providing space for reflection and feelings, free of suggestion, which may therefore be of a very personal nature, these forms embody much more than just the material itself. These are all examples of a visual exploration of a possible tactility that goes beyond first impressions.
Deze tentoonstelling is de vierde op rij in dit nieuwe paviljoen voor hedendaagse kunst in Watou.
Waar we de grenzen van de abstracte vormentaal opgezocht hebben via thema’s zoals de verbinding met de natuur, beweeglijkheid, licht en stilte, binnen en buiten, staat nu de materie als concept centraal in deze groepstentoonstelling.
Het materiële oppervlak of het tastbare reliëf zijn de ankerpunten waar het werk van de kunstenaars Herman Bellaert, Paul Bourgeois, Iris Bouwmeester, Trees De Mits en Ilona Plaum elkaar raken. Of het nu plooien zijn van rimpelend textiel of gaatjes in kwetsbaar papier, een horizonlijn in lood of acryl of een houten kader voor een mogelijk huis, een doek van aarde of goud, een installatie die stil en stevig vol beweging is of een tak in een hoek, die lijkt te verdwijnen in een fotografisch diorama. Het zijn vormen van aanwezigheid die veel meer in zich dragen, voorbij de materie is ruimte voor gedachten en gevoelens, vrij van suggestie, en dus heel persoonlijk kunnen zijn. Het zijn alle voorbeelden van een beeldend onderzoeken van een mogelijke tactiliteit die verder gaat.
