The Belgian artist Conrad Willems (°1983) presents a series of architectural works based on play. The basic shapes are those of the well-known wooden toy blocks developed by pedagogue Friedrich Fröbel in the 19th century. By freely playing with these blocks, Conrad creates constructions or compositions which he then rescales and translates into natural stone, concrete or brick. Some remain loosely stacked and modular, others are joined together or assembled on paper. Conrad opens his play box in marble and concrete, and invites the spectator to join.

De basisvormen zijn die van de bekende, houten speelblokken ontwikkeld door pedagoog Friedrich Fröbel in de 19e eeuw. Vanuit vrij spel met deze blokken ontstaan constructies of composities die Conrad herschaalt en uitvoert in natuursteen, beton of baksteen. Sommige blijven los gestapeld en modulair, andere zijn vastgezet in hun materialiteit of op papier. Conrad opent zijn speeldoos in marmer en beton en nodigt de toeschouwer uit in zijn spel.
