We fold something to hide, treasure and preserve. Furthermore, we fold with the intention to unfold later. This particular dynamic is being explored in the solo exhibitions of Lien Buysens and Johan De Wit, which is called ‘Folded Stories’.
By using everyday scenes and objects, they welcome the viewer into their immediate environment and, at the same time challenge the imagination. Both artists seek the essence of these still lifes through the exploration and deconstruction of forms.
To achieve this, they each employ different methods and processes: Lien Buysens creates layering with lines and colours, whereas Johan De Wit folds and manipulates his 3D objects in physical space. A certain tenderness, as well as humour in the everyday, is found in the folds of their works and in the repeated patches of colour. ‘Folded Stories’ is a dialogue between Buysens and De Wit as well as an embrace between their artwork and the viewer.
We vouwen iets dicht om het te verbergen, te koesteren en te bewaren. Bovendien vouwen we met de intentie het later weer te kunnen openen. De solo-exposities van Lien Buysens en Johan De Wit verkennen deze bijzondere dynamiek in ‘Folded Stories’.
Aan de hand van alledaagse taferelen en objecten ontvangen ze de kijker in hun directe omgeving, al wordt de verbeelding ook uitgedaagd. Beide kunstenaars zoeken immers naar de essentie van deze stillevens door vormen af te tasten en te deconstrueren. Hiervoor hanteren ze elk verschillende methodes en processen.
Lien Buysens creëert een gelaagdheid met lijnen en kleur, terwijl Johan De Wit zijn 3D-objecten plooit en manipuleert in de fysieke ruimte. Het is in de vouwen, de kleurvlakken en herhalingen van hun werken, dat we een zekere tederheid ervaren, maar ook humor in het alledaagse vinden. ‘Folded Stories’ is een dialoog tussen Buysens en De Wit als maar ook een omarming tussen kijker en kunstwerk.
